The History of St Peter's Church

\
St Peter’s Church stands at the heart of the village and has been a place of Christian worship for well over a thousand years. Local tradition places the church’s beginnings as early as the 9th century, and its existence is inferred in the Domesday Book, suggesting an established Christian community here soon after the Norman Conquest.
The building seen today reflects centuries of change, care, and faithfulness. St Peter’s was substantially rebuilt during the 13th and 14th centuries, with the tower added in the 15th century. In the Middle Ages the church was connected with the Cistercian monastery of Pipewell in Northamptonshire, and records show a non-monastic priest serving the parish from 1329. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538, the church continued its life as a parish church, adapting to the religious and social changes of the time.
Later generations also left their mark. The church underwent Victorian remodelling in the 19th century and was restored in 1908, ensuring it remained a living place of worship while preserving its historic character. Features such as the Norman font and medieval stone piscinas still speak quietly of the many centuries of prayer and devotion that have shaped this place.
Yet St Peter’s is more than an ancient and beautiful building. It represents a long and continuous tradition of Christian faith, where countless generations have gathered to worship God, celebrate life’s joys, and seek comfort in times of sorrow. Today, as in centuries past, the church remains alive with faith, welcoming the faithful and visitors alike, and looking forward with hope and expectation to worshipping God for many years to come.

St Peter’s rests within beautiful surroundings, including one of Warwickshire’s largest graveyards. It is a place of peace and serenity, where loved ones lie remembered, and where the landscape invites quiet reflection, gentle walks, and moments of stillness framed by wide, open views. This is a shared and much-loved space, open to all who wish to spend time here, enjoy the views, and experience its sense of calm.
